It has been established that the environment of Bolshoi
Solovetsky Island faces environmental problems due to growing tourism, outdated
infrastructure and improper storage of waste. Currently, there are 16 excursion
routes on the territory, and the tourist flow in 2023 reached 60 thousand people. It
is expected that the peak load will be in 2029 in connection with the celebration of
the 600th anniversary of the founding of the first monastic settlement on Solovki.
To minimize the negative impact on the environment (soil, including
potential agricultural land) and public health, it is necessary to monitor and control
pollution. So, sampling was carried out near pollution sources, which were
characterized by various degrees of anthropogenic load. Analysis of the results
of the pH of the aqueous suspension showed that for the studied areas it is in the
range of 4.4 ÷ 8.9, with average background values of 8.1. Analysis of data on
the content of heavy metals revealed an excess of the concentration of some
elements over the background values. The calculated total pollution index
showed that all soils in the studied areas have an acceptable pollution category,
but there is a tendency towards the accumulation of heavy metals in soils.
In general, zinc, lead, chromium, barium and strontium are mainly accumulated
in the upper layer of the soils of Bolshoi Solovetsky Island. Vanadium and
magnesium were also found in the soils of individual study sites.
The obtained research results are the basis for additional work to clarify the
sources of soil pollution, as well as for the creation of comprehensive environmental
